About Cancer
Cancer refers to a group of more than 100 diseases. Cancers are characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells that invade surrounding tissue and may spread to other organs. Types of cancer are often named for the organs or tissues where cancerous cells form. For example, brain cancer starts in the cells of the brain. While many cancers form solid tumors, some cancers, like leukemia, do not.

What are the most common kinds of cancer?
There are hundreds of different cancers, which are typically grouped into six major categories:
- Carcinoma (beginning in the skin or tissues of the internal organs)
- Sarcoma (developing in the bone, cartilage, fat, muscle or connective tissues)
- Myeloma (developing in the plasma cells of bone marrow)
- Leukemia (cancer of blood cells)
- Lymphoma (starts in the immune system)
- Mixed types (may be within one category or from different categories)
The most common cancers are breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer and colorectal cancers.
How is cancer treated?
How cancer is treated depends on many things, including the cancer type and whether it has spread. Treatments are customized to each individual. Some people will only have one treatment, but most have a combination of several different treatments. These can include surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation, immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Talk to your doctor to learn more about all of your treatment options.
What are the side effects of cancer treatment?
Different types of treatment will have different side effects. Treatment also effects individuals differently, so it is difficult to predict the side effects a person might experience. Some common side effects from chemotherapy include nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, hair loss and mouth sores. Radiation treatments can cause skin irritation and fatigue (extreme tiredness). Your healthcare team will work with you to help you manage the side effects of your treatment.
What is remission?
Remission means that cancer is responding to treatment. In complete remission, all the signs and symptoms of cancer are gone although cancer may still be in the body. In partial remission, some, but not all, signs and symptoms of cancer are gone.
Remission can last weeks or years. If cancer recurs, another remission may be achieved with more treatment.
